Women’s Reader’s Choice Presented by Toyota: Anna Gasser—TransWorld Snowboarding Riders’ Poll 19

Women’s Reader’s Choice: Anna Gasser

Anna Gasser had the season of a lifetime, landing on nearly every major podium the world over, and it seems that the audience took notice, as evidenced by her win in the Women’s Reader’s Choice category. This award recognizes pro snowboarders who have broken down the barriers of our little sub-culture and burst out onto a mainstream stage across the globe, and Anna’s just getting started. With the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang right around the corner, she’s a surefire favorite to medal and if that happens, Anna is going to go from pro snowboarder to full-on celebrity, blanketing magazines and televisions all over the world, and we can’t wait to tag along for the ride.

About Riders’ Poll: For 19 years, TransWorld SNOWboarding has polled the professional snowboarding community to find their picks for the best riders of the year. Each season, these awards are decided by the opinions of over 100 pros. While TransWorld SNOWboarding hosts the awards, the winners are truly a reflection of peer acknowledgement—the highest honor any rider can receive.

Red Gerard – Arcadia Full Part – 48 Hour Exclusive

Enjoy the 48-hour exclusive leak of Red Gerards’s full part from TransWorld SNOWboarding’s latest movie Arcadia.

You might know Red Gerard from his competitive success, especially with the buzz centered around him and the group of up-and-comers looking to make a statement in the 2018 Winter Olympics, but this kid is by no means just hucking it for the hardware. Taking his monochromatic outfit and dynamic riding to the backcountry, Red found gold this past season filming in Montana, Tahoe and Aspen, without any judges in site. In-between watching his drops as he vies for a spot on the Olympic squad, enjoy his sophomore part with TransWorld SNOWboarding, and keep an eye out for whatever he does next.

Enjoy the 48 hour exclusive watch of Victor de Le Rue’s full part from TransWorld SNOWboarding’s Arcadia, available online now.

With Arcadia, Victor de Le Rue has officially gone back-to-back-to-back with standout parts in the past three TransWorld movies. That alone speaks to the level of riding above. The experience and talent that Victor brings to the crew is easily seen on screen as the 28-year-old Frenchman delivers once again, a mind-blowing part complete with

With the addition of Eric Jackson, The Manboys did the unthinkable, which was step up the level of their riding again. The Catan loving, Whistler-based crew featuring Matt Belzile, Rusty Ockenden, Chris Rasman, Jody Wachniak, and Eric Jackson keep it full throttle from the start, which is probably why their full part from our latest endeavor, Arcadia, is so good. Don’t believe us? See if you can take your eyes off the screen after Belzile’s cab 900… Yeah, that is what we thought.

Pro Setups: Manboys Head-to-Toe 2017-2018 Gear

Rusty Ockenden

Birthday: April 8, 1986

Home Mountain: Whistler/Blackcomb

Stance: Goofy

Board: Endeavor Maverick 165

Boots: Adidas Boost

Bindings: Burton Cartel EST

Jacket: Oakley Silver Fox Biozone Jacket

Hoodie: Oakley Factory Pilot

Pants: Oakley Whiteroom Biozone Pant

Hats: Usually don’t fit

Mitts: Oakley Roundhouse Mitt

Base Layers: 10 year old Foursquare stuff

Goggles: Oakley Line Miners with Prizm lense

Sunglasses: Oakley Latch Prizm

Socks: Burton socks that I stole from Mark Sollors. Lots of holes in them, need to steal more.

What’s your favorite piece of gear and why?

Other than the essentials – an Airhole. I feel naked without my face covered. Also, I really don’t like sunscreen because it’s just smearing chemicals on your face… So I will use it for sun as well as cold, pretty key for me!

What gear trend do you see in snowboarding that you’d like to fade out?

Trends come and go, I have no problem with any of ’em. People can do what they want, and if everyone looked the same, that wouldn’t be fun would it? I have noticed a lot of Carhartt gear on kids who definitely do not look like carpenters though. Ha ha

Has living in Whistler affected your gear in any way?

Yeah, for sure. It has made me enjoy functionality of the gear I wear. I ride in stormy powder for most of the season, so I enjoy being warm and dry.

Any other comments about your gear you’d like our readers to know?

Yeah, I just would suggest trying a bigger snowboard. I stepped up from a 160 to a 165 this year and it’s super fun. (speaking to the jumper / free rider / powder rider)

Facemask: Airhole Merino Balaclava

Mitts: 686 Gore Tex Ghost Mitt

Base Layers: 686 Frontier base layer

Goggles: Smith I/Os

Sunglasses: Smith Marvine

Socks: Stance

What’s your favorite piece of gear and why?

It’s hard to choose just one piece, but I will say that I love the GLCR Gore Tex line because it keeps me warm and dry so that I can stay out as long as I want.

What gear trend do you see in snowboarding that you’d like to fade out?

To be honest, I’m down with all the trends… some might not be for me but I think it keeps it interesting and fresh.

Any other comments about your gear you’d like our readers to know?

Only that I think it’s worth buying the good stuff, I always say “buy it nice or buy it twice” and I think that’s true when it comes to snowboard gear.

Hats: Spacecraft

Mitts: Celtek Radar Mitten

Base Layers: Saxx Underwear Black Sheep

Goggles: Spy Optic Ace

Sunglasses: Spy Optic Beachwood

Socks: Stance Merino Wool Snow Socks

What’s your favorite piece of gear and why?

Thats a tough one. I’m kind of a nerd with all my gear. My friends always bug me about how into the product tech I am. I love my Spy goggle lens options, though. I feel weird traveling anywhere without at least 2 pairs on me, and like 3 lenses for each. That and my snowmobile.

What gear trend do you see in snowboarding that you’d like to fade out?

Little beanies worn super high on your head where they only cover half your ears and almost cover your eyebrows. I really don’t get it, especially on a cold day. I guess I am just old.

Any other comments about your gear you’d like our readers to know?

I don’t like to promote gear that I wouldn’t actually purchase myself, and with that said I am really proud of all the gear I wear. I honestly believe Lib Tech is one of the best board riding companies out there. Coolest people working for them and running the show. Plus, they make the worlds best snowboards, and damn amazing surfboards and skateboards too.

What’s your favorite piece of gear and why?

The board! I mean that shits important. Or maybe gear, I hate being wet and cold, being dry is super dope.

What gear trend do you see in snowboarding that you’d like to fade out?

Nowadays, I’m pretty down for anything, seriously what ever floats your boat! Do you, it’s 2017.

Any other comments about your gear you’d like our readers to know?

Wax your board bro, speeds tight.

Jesse Paul – Arcadia Full Part – 48 Hour Exclusive

We don’t think there is a feature in the world that Minnesota-bred rider Jesse Paul could not hit. From Japan, Cleveland, Utah and the rest of the world over, Paul bashes gates and finds a way to get creative on every obstacle in front of him. Helped by coffee, ibuprofen, friends, and his chiropractor, his full part from TransWorld’s latest endeavor, Arcadia, is must-see snowboarding.

Halldor Helgason – Arcadia Full Part

We don’t want to spoil the ender, but Halldor Helgason‘s full part in Arcadia is just too good. Online for 48 hours only, enjoy this exclusive online stream of one of the best snowboarding parts in the last decade. Complete with street, backcountry, park, technical riding, and just balls-to-the-wall massive hits, Halldor’s ender embodies the man strapped in on screen. He is the personification of a metal song sliding sideways, and is still one of the most humble and friendly characters we have ever met.

His motivation this year, besides just his absolute love for snowboarding, was the 10-shot rule. Every ten clips he got for his part, whether it was a hammer, crash, or both, he would allow himself to party and get blackout drunk. If you add all the shots up in his six minute part, it is easy to see that he threw a lot more back than just insane upside-down methods (we still aren’t sure what to call them). When you are done watching his full part, check out the interview with Halldor to see what all went in to making his latest video piece that will most definitely go down in the history books marking a rider that is not just pushing the whole culture of snowboarding when it is in great need to be pushed, but is doing it amongst a class of his own.

“I had a couple of days off from other jobs and took the flight to Riksgränsen to hook up with Halldor, Victor Daviet and the BYNDxMDLS boys. Due to bad weather in Riksgränsen we took the RV down to Kiruna which is a small mining town in the northern parts of Sweden. We all went out scoping for spots and “Kuske” and Halldor found an old mine outside the town with different spots in it.

Halldor found this spot where you had to gap over a cave and then in to a super steep wallride. I first shot it with a long lens so you could see what was going on but the spot didn’t look so good from that angle so I decided to go for a more artsy one. I picked up my fisheye and went in to the cave. The cave was really dark so I put a flash in there to lighten it up and add another dimension to the photo. After that I had to throw a lot of snow in to cover the traces from me. When I first saw the photos on the camera I was really excited on how it looked. I remember running over to Halldor showing him the shots to get him pumped after he had taking some heavy slams. He did a couple more tries and then just stomped his cab hardway 270 to the nasty wall/rockride.

Growing up, I read snowboard magazines all the time. Inspired by Swedish photographers like Vincent Skoglund and Anders Neuman. When I Got in to snowboard photogaphy seven years ago I could only dream about getting covers on big magazines, especially TWSNOW. As the mags get fewer it is an honor to have one of my works on the front. Hopefully I can inspire snowboarders and photographers like others have done with me. Keep shredding!” – Daniel Bernstal

“This one was heavy for Pat. FS invert on a mental wind feature up in British Columbia. There was a huge rock formation above the inrun where it would have been more ideal to drop so he had to pick to start from the left or the right. It was probably a good 500 ft. vertical run and with the added door number one or door number two scenario, it was hard to tell the best way into it. Standing under this thing was powerful and from the bottom it was just like looking at a big white wall. Took some figuring out for sure. Once he found it though, it came together pretty quickly. Just in the nick of time too, because the shadow line was creeping down. It all lined up and Pat was right on the money. The highest one on the backdoor of the new TWS.” – Aaron Blatt

Arcadia and More at Snowboard On The Block 2017

Words| Julia Spadaro   Photos| Mark Clavin

The local Colorado snowboard community came out in droves to watch the newest snowboard films, support the industry, and kick off the season in Denver’s Sculpture Park for Snowboard On The Block 2017 this past Saturday.

Frank April hands out a skateboard as a prize prior to the Arbor “Cosa Nostra” premiere.

The crowd gathers for the start of Arcadia.

With five movies playing and two bands headlining, dozens of tents, and plenty of beer, there was no shortage of entertainment. The Method Movie 2 started the afternoon, followed by Arbor’s Cosa Nostra, TransWorld’s own Arcadia, Absinthe Film’s Turbo Dojo, and SNOWBOARDER’s Pepper to close out the premieres for the fifth installment of the highly anticipated annual event.

Check out the intro to Arcadia here!

Halldor caught picking his nose at Snowboard On The Block 2017.

This year showcased one stage for entertainment, whereas in previous years, there were multiple theaters playing films at the same time and festival goers had to choose where to designate their attention. Crowds gathered on the grass to view the movies throughout the evening and judging by the collective sounds of excitement at each major part and Eddie Wall’s natural talent as a Master of Ceremonies, it’s safe the say the people were stoked.

The Murder City Devils and Vandals provided the musical entertainment for the evening.

Two for Ten! $2.00 10 Barrel beers that is.

Live music and sunshine kept energy levels up and morale high, with shoulder-to-shoulder attendance for performances by The Murder City Devils and The Vandals. People flocked to the Hornitos hut, the Fireball tent and all of the beer gardens, especially when 10 Barrel Brewing gave out $2 beers for a quick 30-minute window. Food stands on the way in ensured people didn’t get too tipsy by supplying delicacies like East Coast style pizza and delicious crepes.

Many brands came out to hold it down at their booths with product displays and awesome sales including Arbor, Bataleon, Skullcandy, and BOA. By the time the sun set, Sculpture Park held the biggest lot of people seen all day.

It was a pretty good night for Jack Wiley, who won a heli trip courtesy of Eagle Pass Heli.

After the event came to a close, downtown Denver bars proved to entertain some killer afterparties. Between sunshine, excellent food and drink, kickass movies, and good company, Snowboard On The Block 2017 was a huge success! Check out the intro to Arcadia below and don’t forget to get a copy on iTunes now!
